HBOT – Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you may want to know before your first session

What is HBOT and how does it work?

HBOT stands for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. During a session, you relax inside a pressurised chamber while breathing oxygen through a mask. Increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into the liquid part of the blood, called plasma.

What does 1.5 ATA mean?

At sea level, normal atmospheric pressure is around 1 ATA. Our chamber operates at up to 1.5 ATA, which means the pressure inside is around 50% higher than normal atmospheric pressure.

What does a hyperbaric chamber feel like?

Most of the session simply feels like lying down and relaxing. The main difference you may notice is pressure in your ears while the chamber is pressurising, similar to take-off or landing on a plane.

Does HBOT hurt?

A session should not be painful. Some people may experience temporary pressure or discomfort in their ears while the pressure is increasing. We explain how to equalise your ears before the session and can slow or stop pressurisation if needed.

What happens during my first session?

We will go through your health questionnaire, explain the chamber and show you how to equalise your ears. Once you are comfortable inside, the pressure is increased gradually. You then relax and breathe oxygen through a mask during the session. At the end, the pressure is slowly returned to normal before the chamber is opened.

How long does a session take?

A standard session at Repure Wellness is approximately 60 minutes, plus a few minutes for gradual pressurisation and depressurisation.

What can I do inside the chamber?

You can listen to music using headphones, read a book or simply relax. Many clients treat it as an hour where they do not have to do anything at all.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that you can easily relax in for around an hour. We will also explain before your session which items should or should not be taken inside the chamber.

Do I have to wear an oxygen mask?

Yes. During our HBOT sessions, oxygen is delivered through a mask while you relax inside the pressurised chamber.

How many HBOT sessions do I need?

There is no single number that suits everyone. It depends on your reason for using HBOT, your goals and your individual circumstances. Some people use occasional sessions as part of their wellness routine, while others choose a more regular course.

Is HBOT suitable for everyone?

No. There are some health conditions and situations where HBOT may not be suitable. This is why every new client completes a health questionnaire before their first session. If anything needs further clarification, we may ask you to speak with your healthcare professional before proceeding.

What if I feel uncomfortable during the session?

You are monitored throughout the session and can communicate with us at any time. If you experience ear discomfort, anxiety or simply want to stop, we can adjust the pressure and end the session safely.

Can I combine HBOT with other wellness sessions?

In some cases, clients choose to combine HBOT with other wellness services such as Red Light or Pressotherapy. The best order can depend on the sessions being used and your individual circumstances, so we can help you plan this beforehand.

Where can I try HBOT near Redditch?

Repure Wellness offers 1.5 ATA hyperbaric oxygen sessions in Redditch. If you are unsure whether HBOT is suitable for you or would like to know what your first visit involves, you can contact us before booking.
