Red Light Therapy – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Red Light Therapy?
Red Light Therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to interact with the body. Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths and are studied for their effects on skin, cellular function, muscles and recovery.

Is Red Light Therapy the same as a sunbed?
No. Red Light Therapy does not use UV light, which is responsible for tanning and sunburn. It uses red and near-infrared wavelengths instead.

Will Red Light Therapy give me a tan?
No. Because Red Light Therapy does not rely on UV radiation, it is not designed to tan the skin.

What is the difference between red light and near-infrared light?
Red light is visible and generally works closer to the surface, making it particularly relevant to the skin. Near-infrared light is invisible to the eye and can penetrate more deeply into tissues, including muscles and areas around joints.

Why does your panel use several wavelengths?
Different wavelengths interact with the body at different depths. A multi-wavelength panel allows one session to deliver both red and near-infrared light across a wider range of tissues rather than relying on just one wavelength.

Is a full-body panel the same as a red light face mask?
Not exactly. A face mask treats a small, localised area, while a full-body panel exposes a much larger area during the same session. Devices can also differ in wavelength range, intensity and how the light is delivered.

What can Red Light Therapy support?
Photobiomodulation is studied in areas including skin appearance, collagen-related activity, cellular energy, muscle soreness and recovery, physical performance and joint comfort. The response depends on the wavelength, dose, device and reason for using it.

How long is a session?
At Repure Wellness, a Red Light session lasts around 20 minutes. The aim is not simply to stay under the light for as long as possible — dose and consistency are more important than extending the session unnecessarily.

How often should I use Red Light Therapy?
There is no single frequency that suits every goal. Research often uses repeated sessions over a number of weeks rather than one isolated treatment. The most suitable routine can depend on whether your focus is skin, exercise recovery, muscles or general wellness.

Will I feel anything during the session?
You may feel gentle warmth from the panel, but Red Light Therapy should not feel like intense heat. Many people simply relax during the session.

Do I need to wear protective glasses?
We provide eye protection for use during the session. Red and near-infrared light are very bright at close range, so we follow the appropriate eye-protection guidance for our panel.

What should I wear?
Light needs access to the area you want to expose, so clothing will block some of the light. For full-body sessions, clients normally wear underwear, shorts or similar comfortable clothing depending on the areas they want exposed.

Can I wear makeup or skincare products?
For facial exposure, clean skin is usually preferable. Heavy makeup or products that create a physical barrier on the skin may reduce direct light exposure, so arriving with clean skin is the simplest option.

Is Red Light Therapy painful?
No. There are no needles, pressure or physical manipulation involved. You simply relax in front of the panel while the light is delivered.

Can one session make a difference?
One session still provides a light stimulus, but Red Light Therapy is generally better thought of as a routine rather than a one-off quick fix. Many of the outcomes studied in photobiomodulation research involve repeated exposure over time.

Is more Red Light always better?
No. Photobiomodulation is dose-dependent. Longer or stronger exposure does not automatically mean a better result. Wavelength, intensity, distance, session length and frequency all contribute to the overall dose.

Can I use Red Light Therapy before or after exercise?
Red and near-infrared light have both been studied around exercise and muscle recovery. The timing can depend on the goal, so it does not always need to be used only after training.

Can Red Light Therapy be combined with other wellness sessions?
Yes, clients may combine Red Light with other wellness services such as HBOT or Pressotherapy. The most sensible order can depend on the sessions being combined and the individual client.

Is Red Light Therapy suitable for everyone?
Not necessarily. We ask clients about relevant health conditions and medications before treatment. Certain circumstances can require additional consideration or medical advice before using photobiomodulation.

Do I need to do anything after the session?
There is usually no downtime. You can normally continue with your day straight afterwards.
